It’s never easy to say you aren’t taking part in a race the day before race day. It’s frustrating! It’s tough! It’s gut wrenching!
After finishing 2nd last year by only a few seconds last year to a great mate, Tim Reed, I really wanted to make this return to Cebu an even better one. After coming away with the Asia-Pacific Ironman title in Cairns, I was very hungry to give the 70.3 Asia-Pacific title a really good crack.
What started out as a very easy pre-race ride this morning with Tim Reed, Sam Betten, Leon Griffin and Craig Alexander to get the legs moving, turned into gravel rash and stitches. As with all pre-race rides, they are nice and easy and I was really cautious for most of the ride.
We had headed back to the hotel and decided to do a small spin of the legs up the road and back. I was chatting with Crowie and hadn’t noticed in a shaded part of the road that there was a fairly sizeable pothole. I was lucky to have been doing anything more than 20km/h. I hit the deck face first which wasn’t enjoyable to say the very least.

I dusted myself off and headed back to the hotel and was immediately checked over to by the nurse. For extra precaution I jumped into the ambulance which took me to the local hospital to get me patched up and properly checked over – including 5 stitches on my chin. Thankfully nothing is broken.
Where to from here? I’ll take this small opportunity to take some time out and to cheer on all the guys and girls racing tomorrow.
All the best out there and stay safe.
